About
Hi, I'm Gabriella, a freelance editor for publishers, independent authors and businesses.
Before launching my editing business, I worked in-house at HarperCollins, NewSouth Publishing and Murdoch Books. In that time, I promoted new releases, managed editorial processes and helped authors prepare their books for publication.
I also dabbled in bookselling (well, it was more than a dabble), and wrote a novel that was shortlisted for The Australian/Vogel Literary Award.
Since then, I've helped new and established authors sharpen their message or turn rough drafts into polished prose. Editing specialties include cooking, gardening, history, biography, business, self-help, popular science, literary fiction, narrative non-fiction and marketing content. But I can adapt to other subject areas too.
When I'm not wielding my red pen (benignly, of course), I'm watching
Mad Men, churning gelato (my salted caramel is to die for), eating dumplings and harvesting veggies from my garden.

"Gabriella was a pleasure to work with. She 'got it' from the start. She brought wit, warmth and respect to They'll Never Hold Me. Her keen eye turned the verbose into the concise and ensured the narrative stayed true to the characters and events."
Michael Adams, They'll Never Hold Me, Affirm Press

What are my editing superpowers?
-
As an experienced cookbook editor, I know how ingredients should be listed, the terminology you should use and the difference between a roux and a roulade! For more about my process, see Cookbook editing: A step-by-step guide.
-
I worked in-house for two non-fiction publishers, so I've gained experience managing and editing biography, history, popular science and creative non-fiction. For more about my subject matter expertise, see FAQs.
-
I've been trained in conversion copywriting, so if you're a business owner or marketer, my editing will always respect your keywords, brand voice and copywriting frameworks.

What's it like to work with me?
-
Clients say I'm fast, dedicated and thorough (must be my Type A personality!). And award-winning author Mandy Sayer described my editing as 'literary midwifery'.
-
As a non-fiction editor, I ask lots of questions. That's because I want to understand your target audience, goals and style/brand guide before I get started.
-
I provide a rationale for my edits or suggestions, as well as actionable tips on how to optimise your writing. To get a feel for my editing style, request a sample edit.
